Hey guys, it’s Lena. I know you’ve been on college fashio for a while, but a recent reflection on my posts left me with a startling realization. I’ve been giving you lots of tips for hair and clothing choices, but I have never explained the different kind of style that are out there. Having your own specific style or aesthetic can be crucial is using fashion to show people your personality and what kinds of things you like. Having a set style that you like makes you appear more organized and attractive. Additionally, knowing what kind of style you are aiming to achieve can help guide you on what kinds of clothes to purchase and save you money. For example, if your style is more Boho, then you know you’re not going to go and purchase a black and white checkered crop top because it doesn’t fit that aesthetic. With the importance of having a consistent style in mind, let’s dive into a few of the most popular fashion aesthetics for women today!

Boho

The “Boho” style comes from the term bohemian, which was the term used to describe the counterculture that arose during the French Revolution. Although it traces its roots to “hippie clothing”, boho style is worn by women in many different cultures. Key clothing items in the boho style include flowing dresses and blouses made of cotton or light cloth. They tend to keep along a warm color scheme with earthy tones. A boho out fit might include a loose tunic, cotton slacks, sandals and layers of long necklaces. Flower crowns styled with long, flowing hair with the occasional accent braid is characteristic of this aesthetic. Popular patterns include paisley, tie dye, and lace for decoration on tops. Anything with fringe or dangle stands is also a key element to boho style. This style is all about looking comfortable and careless, while also accentuating the body’s natural curves and movement.

E-boy/E-Girl

This style has recently become very trendy. The closest celebrity icon that I think would represent this style would be Billie Eillish. This style is very androgynous, with layering. It tends to have loose, boxy band - t shirts layered over a black and white striped turtleneck. In addition to this, these tops are often tucked into high waisted black cargo pants or mom jeans that are rolled up to show the ankle. The color scheme for this aesthetic is very simple, centering around black, white, red, and yellows. Another key aspect of the E-girl style is wearing chunky chains as necklaces and on pants. Bold leather belts accentuate the tucked in style. Chunky sneakers, boots, and vans are essential to achieving this pop-punk look.

VSCO Girl

Similar to E-boy fashion, this is a popular trend among younger crowds. Not only are VSCO girls know for a specific style, but they also have different catchphrases and inside trends. This style originated from the fashion that popular young female influencers wore when they posted photos of themselves on a photo editing app called VSCO. It’s the fashion baby of casual 90s fashion and surfer girl style. This style is characterized by cute, but comfortable clothing with lots of pastel, beach themed colors. Seashell necklaces and scrunchies are key accessories for this style. Oversized t shirts or sweatshirts that cover shorts with comfy sneakers or Berkenstok sandals are characteristic of this aesthetic. Brandy Melville crop tops and high-waisted jeans are also very popular.

Grunge fashion

I bet you can guess when this fashion style came about! Yep, the 90s. Grunge clothing is characterized by having a loose, often androgynous silhouette. Ripped boyfriend jeans with thrifted band t-shirts or flannels tucked in are stereotypical of this style. Popular shoes typically worn today with this style include classic black vans or Doc Marten combat boots. Accessories often paired with the grunge look include choker necklaces and stud earrings. This look was similar to the boho look in giving off an effortless vibe, but with more rock n roll. Women’s hairstyles for this look tend to be messy waves or a loose bun on top of the head.

Preppy

When you think preppy, think school uniform, but more fashionable. Preppy style is all about combining the clean, minimalist style of business apparel with every day comfort. A nice button down shirt, a solid sweater, a casual blazer, or a classic pair of dark wash jeans all fit into the preppy style. Preppy clothing tends to be clean - cut, without tears or patches with bold colors, rather than pastels or earthy tones. It also tends to stick to solid colors or simple patterns like stripes or plaid. These pieces are not flowing, but instead are tailored pieces that create structure and clean lines in an outfit.Oftentimes, nautical colors and outfits can influence preppy style. Flats or heels tend to be the shoe staple of those with a preppy style.

These are just a few of the most popular or notable fashion styles, but I hope they can give you inspiration for changing up your style or figuring out how to define your style!
