Can Cold Weather Gear Be Fashionable?

It’s hard to look good and layer your clothes, right? Wrong. You can look good while being warm. Don’t put yourself in danger just to look good. I will teach you how to layer so that you feel good about what you are wearing.

First things first, find a winter jacket that is warm, has a hood that will stay up and won’t be falling over all the time in the wind. If you live in places where it gets really cold and windy in the winter you might understand this struggle. There’s nothing worse than having to take your hands out of your pocket to pull your hood back up after the wind blows it off of your head. Last year I found myself constantly having to do that.

In terms of winter jacket, I recommend getting a longer winter coat that goes past your hips to around knee length or mid thigh. Having a jacket like this helps to keep more of your body warm and it’s also nice for when you have to sit to wait for the bus to come on a cold/snowy bench. Another side note, if you go ice skating, wearing a longer coat will help soften the blow when you fall.

Now I know that you probably have a hood on your jacket, but it’s a good idea to wear a hat as well. That way when your hood blows off, your hat won’t be exposed to the elements. Personally I don’t think that I look good in hats, but I have found some really cute winter hats that I love to wear. The key to making warm accessories look good is to color coordinate. If you can find a cute set that has a hat, scarf, and gloves that all have the same colors it makes you look cute and put together.

My favorite places to buy cold weather gear are Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Usually you can find sets of gloves, hats and possibly a scarf as well. It seems that over the years Target’s quality of clothing just gets better and better.

One of the biggest inconveniences of the winter is that it will be freezing cold outside, but as soon as you enter into a building you are instantly sweating. Is that just me? Hopefully not. Anyways, this occurrence should not stop you from dressing for the weather outside. It is always better to have the option to take off clothing rather than not have enough clothing to keep you warm. If you need to maybe just keep some gloves, and a hat in your backpack for those days when it’s warm during the day, but cold at night.

When it's winter and you are trying to layer your clothing, one of my favorite outfit combinations is a sweatshirt without a hoodie under a vest, and paired with an infinity scarf. Another good option to wear is a long-sleeve shirt with a sweatshirt on over it or a fleece jacket and then top that off with a winter jacket and your cold weather gear.

Now don’t forget to wear warm shoes either. I love to wear my Ugg boots, but when it is really snowy and icy it might be better to wear some winter boots are actually made for the snow unlike Uggs. However, a problem that I run into especially with Uggs is that once I get to class sometimes my feet start sweating and there is very little that you can do to help that situation when you are sitting in class. Personally though, I would rather have sweaty feet than frostbite.

Another insight that I want to share with you guys is that when you are going to the gym and you need to wear gym shoes or when you have a business meeting that you need to wear fancy shoes for, bring those shoes with you and change out of your boots so that you aren’t ruining your nice shoes in the nasty snow, slush, and salt.
