Glasses as an Accessory

When I was in third grade, I failed my eye exam. I had to go to the eye doctor where I was told the news that I needed to get glasses. I can’t even begin to tell you how devastated I was. I thought I was going to be ugly, labeled as a nerd, and lose all my friends (rather dramatic, but, hey, I was in third grade). Once eighth grade came along, I finally was able to get contacts. I wore these everyday until freshman year of college. At this point, I realized the true power of glasses. I discovered they didn’t instantly make you ugly or a nerd or unlikeable; they were actually very useful as an accessory (and I guess to, you know, see).
My favorite way to wear my glasses as an accessory is with my business professional attire. I feel like glasses make me look more professional. Instead of feeling nerdy, I feel smart and confident with my glasses on while networking or interviewing. Also, the glasses I wear, luckily, are simple black frames that will look good in any professional outfit I choose.

Another way I like to use my glasses as an accessory is when I’m not trying very hard on my outfit (basically the polar opposite of business professional attire). A lot of the time when I don’t work too hard on choosing my outfit, I also don’t put any time into putting makeup on. I tend to feel naked when I'm not wearing makeup so glasses, to me, allow for something to be on my face to distract people from looking at my uncovered blemishes.
Now, using glasses as an accessory can also mean not using your glasses can be a special occasion. Usually with any outfit I try on in the morning, I see what I look like with and without my glasses to determine which one I prefer. I almost always wear my glasses with the types of outfits I previously mentioned, but with cute casual outfits sometimes I wear them and sometimes I don’t. I almost never wear them when I am dressed more formally because a “glasses-type” mood is not the one I’m shooting for while I’m all dressed up.
Although I do wear my glasses as an accessory a majority of the time, when I’m deciding whether or not to wear them at the beginning of the day, I obviously take into account the practical factor of using glasses – being able to see well. Since I no longer wear my contacts when I’m not wearing my glasses, I have to think about what I’ll be doing during the day as to not strain my eyes too much with no prescription lenses as aids. Most of my activities on a daily basis don’t involve straining my eyes to see, though, so I can solely focus on using my glasses as an accessory. However, if you are someone who absolutely needs glasses to see well in almost every instance, I recommend you rock those glasses in any outfit you desire to wear!
