Washing Away

Jacob Christian Schäffer invented the washing machine in 1767. Nathaniel Briggs obtained the first patent for a washing machine 30 years later. 210 years later, the first electric washing machine came about. Needless to say, the washing machine is one of the most convenient and effective inventions in history. Not only does it allow us to clean clothes with less labor, it also does a better job than any human does. The argument now a day is not whether a washing machine is effective, it is which brand produces the best washing machine. Therefore, today I will be comparing the washing machines of Whirlpool and Maytag to determine which company has the better product.

Price
Both Maytag and Whirlpool offer free delivery for a majority of their washers. This is great because many washing machines are upwards of $599.99. However, it appears Whirlpool’s free delivery may be more prone to changes, as it is only offered for some purchases when certain deals are in place (they currently have one). Most of Maytag’s washers are cheaper than Whirlpool’s, though, of course, there are a wide range of prices. Advantage: Maytag
Design
Design is a very subjective matter, but there are some things that are objectively bad. The good thing is neither company produces washing machines that are complete eyesores. This is a relief because I would not want a chunk of metal, which looks terrible sitting in my house, even if it is just in the basement. When it comes to my personal preference, I enjoy the circular clear doors of Whirlpool over the blocky square clear doors of Maytag. The differences in doors is the only thing separating the designs drastically. Advantage: Whirlpool

Durability
Whenever you purchase something, you want it to last a long-time and maintain its value, to a certain extent. This certainly applies to an appliance like a washing machine, which will be used almost every week and is vital in the home, apartment, etc. I would go insane if after just a few months my new washing machine broke of its own accord; hence, durability is a key subject. Both Whirlpool and Maytag produce high –quality washing machines, but it seems as though Maytag prioritizes durability. In all their advertisements, they talk about durability, while Whirlpool does not. Now, this does not necessarily mean Maytag is best at durability, but it shows how they focus on it when making their washers. Advantage: Maytag
Washing Quality
I could write an entire research essay on the number of features you could have on a washing machine. I am used to just sticking my clothes in and hitting start, so it is crazy to see all these different options. It is awesome to see how washing machines have developed to conquer new laundry issues. Whirlpool really pushes the ColorLastTM feature to keep clothes vibrant longer and the EcoBoostTM energy efficiency function. Maytag, on the other hand, has the PowerWash® cycle for extra cleaning power and the Optimal Dose dispenser system that provides optimal cleaning by releasing detergent, softener and stain removers at the right time in the right amount. It is a toss-up of which company provides the better washing quality. They each provide unique features and, overall, wash clothes efficiently and effectively. Advantage: Neither
Conclusion
Both Maytag and Whirlpool was clothes well, but I am going to have to choose Maytag. This is because they have relatively low prices and are durable. As a college student, I prioritize price and durability over design, especially considering the wash quality is equal. In addition, can we all agree the PowerWash® cycle sounds really cool?
